How compression works here
The original pixels are decoded in the tab, then re-encoded at the quality you pick. JPEG and WebP use lossy quality sliders. PNG is re-encoded without a quality slider because the canvas PNG path is lossless.
Picking a format
JPEG is the usual choice for photos. WebP is often smaller at the same visual quality in Chromium. PNG is better for screenshots, UI, and type. Re-encoding a photo as PNG rarely shrinks it.
Metadata is dropped
A canvas export does not keep EXIF, GPS, or camera maker notes. Read those first in the EXIF viewer if you need them. For a public post, dropping GPS is usually what you want.
Privacy
Files never leave the device. Closing the tab discards the bitmap. There is no cloud queue and no account.

Will faces stay sharp at 70% quality?
Portraits usually look fine at 70-80% JPEG. Check the preview before you download.
Can I compress a screenshot with text?
Prefer PNG or a high WebP setting so thin type does not smear.
Is EXIF kept?
No. Re-encoding drops metadata. Use the EXIF viewer first if you need to read it.
What is a good target for email?
Under 1 MB per photo is a practical inbox limit. The size readout updates as you drag quality.
Does the original get overwritten?
No. You download a new file. The source on disk is untouched.
